A gearbox's life depends on the oil film between gear teeth. Choosing correctly means looking at viscosity, additives and gear type.
Viscosity grade
Gear oils are graded by ISO VG (for example 150, 220, 320, 460) or AGMA numbers. Heavier loads and lower speeds need higher viscosity; high speeds and cold starts favour lower viscosity. Always begin with the gearbox manufacturer's table.
R&O or EP?
Rust and oxidation (R&O) inhibited oils suit lightly loaded gears. Extreme-pressure (EP) oils add additives that protect teeth under heavy load and shock, as in crushers, mixers and rolling equipment.
Special case: worm gears
Worm gears slide more than they roll and often use bronze wheels. Some EP additives can attack yellow metals, so use oils approved for worm gears.
Maintenance
- Check level and breather regularly.
- Look for water, foaming and metal particles.
- Use oil analysis to set drain intervals instead of guessing.
