Grease keeps lubricant exactly where it is needed, which makes it the first choice for bearings, bushes and open gears. A good choice depends on four things.
1. NLGI consistency grade
The NLGI number describes how stiff the grease is. NLGI 2 is the general-purpose grade for most bearings. Softer grades (NLGI 0 and 00) flow more easily and suit centralised lubrication systems and some enclosed gearboxes. Harder grades (NLGI 3) are used in high-speed or vibrating applications as advised by the OEM.
2. Base oil viscosity
Heavily loaded, slow bearings need a higher base oil viscosity, while fast, light bearings need lower viscosity to avoid churning and heat.
3. Thickener type
Lithium and lithium complex thickeners are the most widely used. Others such as calcium sulphonate, polyurea or aluminium complex are used for water resistance, high temperature or long life. Do not mix greases with different thickeners unless compatibility is confirmed.
4. Temperature and environment
Check the working temperature range, exposure to water, dust and chemicals, and whether the grease needs EP (extreme pressure) additives for heavy loads.
Re-greasing tips
- Add small quantities at the recommended interval; over-greasing raises bearing temperature.
- Wipe nipples clean before greasing.
- When changing grease type, purge the old grease completely.
